These Asian American filmmakers have provided viewers access to the complex and intense relationships within their lives as their varied cultures intersect with their homosexuality.
Seoul to Soul (Paul Detwiler, US, 2006): An adopted Korean boy embarks on a journey from a strict Mormon upbringing in Utah to a tumultuous life of raving, drug trafficking, and addiction in Southern California. Supported by friends in his recovery program, he becomes sober and ultimately embraces his identity as a gay Asian American.
Kali Ma (Soman Chainani, US, 2007): When an Indian mother finds out her son is the victim of a vicious bully, she delivers her own brand of vigilante justice.
Two Men in Shoulder Stand (Paul Knox, US, 2006): On a beach in South India, Sarath and Hassan, one HIV positive and one negative, do yoga together as a means of maintaining health in the absence of medical treatments. Their yoga becomes a means of expressing their love for each other as they search for a moment of transcendence.
Milind Soman Made Me Gay (Harjant Gill, US, 2007): This conceptual documentary about desire and notions of “home” and “belonging,” employs a unique mix of visual elements along with voice over narration to juxtapose memories of the filmmaker’s past against stories of three gay South Asian men living in the diaspora.
Lead Role: Father (PJ Raval, US, 2006): When Joseph puts out a casting call, he never expects his father to show up to the audition. Caught between the character he has created and the man in front of him, Joseph is forced to confront his past.
