Kevin Vong PeekThis weekend is our big PRIDE Rooftop Mixer–the Dress Reveal: Sat. April 26, 2-5 p.m.

Designer Kevin Vong, who propelled the AFC Pride Float 2013 to become the Best Organization float (and even made the front page of the Chicago Tribune) by making a dress out of popcorn, will unveil his new 2014 design at this party atop the Belmont building, 3170 N. Sheridan in Chicago from 2-5 p.m. This year, Kevin has used hundreds of “silver coins” to create a dazzling gown (sneak peek shown here). Thanks to Joel Camden and Craig Murders for hosting this rooftop shindig where, if weather permits, the open-air view will extend from Belmont Harbor to downtown. Tickets $10. Free to donors, parade participants and sponsors. Beer, wine and appetizers will be served.

In the past, AFC members have donated between $50-$100 to the float, which will cost in the range of $2,000. Any donation this weekend will be gratefully appreciated with checks being made to Asians & Friends Chicago. If you’re not able to attend, you can mail your check in the next couple of weeks to Asians & Friends Chicago, P.O. Box A 3916, Chicago, IL 60690-3916 or donate on our website at www.afchicago.org via PayPal. We hope to have either a major sponsor secured (know of a contact?) or the appropriate funds raised by early May. Any help would be appreciated.

Kevin Vong will also host a pre-pride party at his place on Sat. June 21 from 2-6 p.m., 1430 S. Michigan PH1 (Vong or Lump) in Chicago in appreciation for all those who have chosen to help. The Pride Parade will be on Sun., June 29 kicking off at noon and running down Halsted and Broadway streets starting at Montrose.

And don’t forget AFC’s other events, including our first Sunday of the Month Dim Sum at Furama, 4936 N. Broadway in Chicago on Sun. May 4 at 12:30 p.m. and our Sat. May 10 event at Downtown Bar, 440 N. State in Chicago, 7 p.m., where we will watch the GAM-TV webisode debut of “Panda II: Rise of a Gay Asian Bear” (www.gamTVusa.com). $5 donation to an AIDS-awareness charity.
