AFC Halloween Bash! Fri. Oct. 28, 2011 @ 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Forbidden Jungle: Asians and Friends annual Halloween Bash at @mosphere 5355 N. Clark in Chicago is this Friday (10/28). An enchanted rainforest theme complete with haunted tikis will transport guests to an ancestral playground of spirits past. Costume contest, food, 50-50 raffle and GAM-TV will preview its latest websiode series. Tickets $10 (1 free drink) with dramatic discount for groups of five or more. Call (312) 409-1573.

Our next AFC Dining Club will be an Oktoberfest night on Thurs., Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the famed Chicago Brauhaus, 4732 N. Lincoln near Lawrence and Western. The Blue Line, Western and Lawrence busses will get you there. Parking is paid on the street and is relatively open. RSVP is early so we can get a larger group in, so do so by Fri. Oct. 14. And while we’ll have our regular Dim Sum at Furama, 4936 N. Broadway on Sun. Oct. 2, at 12:30 p.m., we’re also actively planning our next big event, which is our annual Halloween party at @mosphere, 5355 N. Clark on Fri., Oct. 28 from 7-10 p.m. Like last year, we’ll be having a $100 prize for costumes in one, possibly two categories. If you’d like to be on the committee to plan the event, call our hotline. We’d be glad to have you (on the committee).

Asians and Friends Chicago Anniversary Potluck Party!

Sunday, August 21, 2011–Noon to 5 p.m. Potluck!

Join AFC for its 27th annual Anniversary Potluck gathering. We will be returning to Steve and Ming’s picnic garden behind their condo building at 5801 N. Sheridan Road in Chicago (If the weather is cool or rainy, then the second-floor party room). We collect annual membership dues to support AFC’s operational needs such as website hosting, the P.O. Box, banking fees and Pride Parade costs: $20 individuals; $30 for couples. Make checks payable to Asians and Friends Chicago. You can mail checks prior to the event (or if you won’t be attending but want to pay the dues) to Asians and Friends Chicago, P.O. Box A 3916, Chicago, Illinois 60690-3916. A Day at the Races. Join us in a jaunt to Arlington Racetrack in Arlington Heights, Ill., for a day of horse racing and betting on the ponies. RSVP to our hotline (312) 409-1573 before July 13 and your entry ticket will be free. The day will start at noon and we are making plans for dinner in nearby downtown Arlington Heights. We’ll also be car pooling from downtown for those who need rides, so city folks will be meeting around 10:30 a.m. at a yet to be determined location. Embracing the theme of absinthe—a distilled drink best known for giving those who partake a vision of the “green fairy”—Asians and Friends Chicago (AFC) will host a “Green (Fairy) Tea Party” to celebrate Pride month, as a way to honor the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community and raise money for AIDS-awareness and Japanese earthquake relief charities.

Suggested donation will be $15 prior to the event and $20 at the door. Donations can be given online through PayPal on this site or by mailing a check to Asians and Friends Chicago, P.O. Box A 3916, Chicago, Illinois 60690-3916.

Price includes a $0.95 credit card processing charge per ticket purchased.

In addition to a stunning view of downtown’s near north area, guests will take part in an absinthe presentation and tasting. Event sponsor GAM-TV USA will also be on hand to debut its official web site and show its comedy-drama “webisode” series called “Pink Underwear.”

AFC Dining Club–This month’s gathering will be at San Soo Gab San (a Korean BBQ), 5247 N. Western (two blocks north of Foster) in Chicago. 7 p.m. Parking on the street is available in residential areas and about a block south on Western. (They have a small parking lot out front but don’t count on it.) Expect a traditional Korean fare of multiple side dishes and meats we cook right there on a grill inset into the table. International Mr. Leather (IML) Leather Mart visit–We’ll gather at the second-floor bar in the atrium lobby of the Hyatt Regency, 151 E. Wacker in downtown Chicago at 1 p.m. We’ll move to the Leather Mart at 1:30 p.m. No RSVP necessary. $5 suggested donation taken at the door. Expect a huge trade-show floor of exhibits and vendors selling all types of leather apparel and accessories. You can purchase beer and wine on the floor. The group typically wanders together for a couple of hours. It’s always a hoot!

Sat.-Sun. April 23-24 (Easter): Milwaukee Road Trip! Saturday events may include a free absynthe (and all spirits) distillery tour and tasting, a performance at the Milwaukee Gay Arts Center (“SQUARE: a stage pornography”–a straight play at the gay center, how hip!) and brunch at the zoo with the Easter Bun.

We’ve figured on the hotel for our AFC Milwaukee Road trip. They have rooms at $119 for that Easter Saturday night, April 23, that can house up to four people. We’ll encourage sign ups so it can amount to about $35/person with tax (but we can’t guarantee it based on the number of people who sign up). If you want to bypass AFC and make your own reservations there, here’s the info.

Holiday Gathering after December Dim Sum

After our regular first-Sunday-of-the-month Dim Sum on Sun. Dec. 5 at 12:30 p.m. at Furama, 4936 N. Broadway in Chicago, Asians and Friends Chicago will host a Holiday Gathering at T’s bar and restaurant, 5025 N. Clark just north of Argyle starting at 3 p.m. We’ll do a gift exchange with anyone who brings a wrapped present ($10 limit), play reindeer games (mixer fun) and of course, Santa will be there for pictures. Come join the informal and impromptu holiday fun! Cash bar and pay for what you order off the retaurant’s full menu. Ample metered parking available along Clark and adjacent side streets.
